Hello all. I have an issue. IOS image was applied to the master switch and on reload the master switch will not come back up. I know the issue is the other two switches in the stack have an older IOS than the master. I disconnected the master from the stack and it still will not come back up. Is my only option to console on, and reboot off the older IOS?

Hello,
What model switch is it? What version are you moving from and going to? There is a chance that the switch is dropping to rommon. You might need to console in and check what is going on when it tries to boot.

2960x in a stack with a couple 2960s. IOS is 15.0(2)EX4 and loaded is 15.5(3)M7

Sounds like you might be using the wrong version. 15.5(3)M7 is a router IOS. A 2960s or 2960x switch can not run that. You could run something like 15.2(2)E8 if you wanted a newer version. You can see all compatible versions on the download page:
2960S:
2960X:
Hope that helps. Thanks!

Sorry, you're right. It's 15.2(2)E7 not 15.5(3)M7

I see. Do you know what filename you used? There are 2960s images and 2960x images and they are different. I imagine at this point you will need console access to the switch to see what is going on. Feel free to post any errors you are getting and I will take a look.

I figured out what is wrong. The hostname was 2960s and it is actually a 2960x. I put the S image on it.

Did you reboot the stack or did you manually power reload the stack?
I am asking because there is a microcode bug affecting EX train. When an IOS upgrade occurs and the switch is running an EX, a manual reload is required because there is a bug with the microcode. When the bug kicks in, the switch will boot into ROMmon.
A complete power down is required.
