Switch port showing Solid Amber port status not connected

mahesh18

Hi  Everyone,

2 Switch ports  on switch  WS-C3560-48PS  are showing as Solid Amber.

Even if i unplug the cable they stay as Amber.Nothing is connected on the other end.

I check the port status it shows not conencted.

There are no errors on the  port.

sh spanning-tree int fa0/20

no spanning tree info available for FastEthernet0/20

Can sometime tell if ports are gone bad or not?

Regards

Mahesh

Hi Mahesh,

Often, err-disabled ports behave like this. Check the output of the following command:

show int status err-disable

If these ports are indeed found err-disabled, you have to solve the reason why they were err-disabled, and then you can reactivate them byt shutting them down, waiting 5-10 seconds, and no shut-ting them again.

Best regards,

Peter

Mahesh,

Shut the port down using the shutdown command. The amber light should go off. Leave it shut down for at least 5 seconds and then reactivate it using no shutdown.

Let me know please!

Best regards,

Peter

Hello Mahesh,

Very strange indeed. Currently, the port reports as being down/down. Is it possible to connect it to a live device and see if the port becomes something different than down/down?

Best regards,

Peter

Hi Peter,

Thanks for quick  reply it is not err-disabled right now.

It was errdisabled earlier due to link flap.

So we put the new cable from switch to PC.

Currently cable from switch port does not connect to PC.

Even if i unplug the cable from switch port it stays Amber.

Hi Peter,

Just did   that.

Left for 10 secs.Still  Solid  Amber.

Hi Mahesh,

I apologize for a totally stupid question - but are you absolutely sure that the switch and port you are configuring is exactly the switch and port that keeps staying amber? No offense please. I recall spending half an hour on a phone desperately trying to help a friend troubleshoot an apparently dead port until he found out he mistook its number with another port.

If this doubt can be eliminated, can you please post the output of the following commands?

show run int fa0/20

show int fa0/20

show int fa0/20 switchport

show int fa0/20 status

Also please check the show logging if there is any message about this interface being deactivated.

Best regards,

Peter

Hi Peter,

Yes i am sure because i did the physical inspection on switch.

Hi Peter,

We did test plug the laptop in and did ipconfig/release and renew and  port is back to normal  green.

Then we unplug the laptop and port shows green now.

Pretty strange behaviour .

Thanks for help.
