Switch Stack Upgrade Question

JamesBalchin1

Hi all,

Apologies if this is a rather simple question. However I am looking for confirmation before I proceed with some upgrades.

Currently I have a network with 72 switches, which are in roughly 10 switch stakes with a few standalone.
When I complete the upgrade this network, are the upgrades done in parallel or sequentially?

I am trying to establish the total period of time I need to allocate for the upgrades.

Thanks

Generally they’re done in one big bang but you can configure staged/staggered upgrades

Section 2 of this document shows the staged upgrade process:

So, If I created staged upgrade groups with a few switch stacks each, for example Access, Aggregation and Core, then set the upgrade sequence. Would all the switch stacks complete at the same time per staged upgrade group?

Or would each individual switch upgrade one by one within its switch staged group, and each switch stack would be upgraded one by one within the staged upgrade group?

I would hope that each staged upgrade group will apply the upgrade to all switches/stacks within it at the same time. Takes ~20minutes to upgrade all.
Rather than a switch by switch approach within the staged upgrade group. Taking ~20 minute per switch.

Hopefully that makes sense?

Hi @JamesBalchin1 , all switches in a group will be upgraded at the same time - so one big bang.
