TestPortAsicLoopback ---> F on Catalyst 2960X

I am running diagnostics on Catalyst 2960X and am seeing results which look like this:

Switch 1:   SerialNo : xxxx

  Overall Diagnostic Result for Switch 1 : MAJOR ERROR

  Test results: (. = Pass, F = Fail, U = Untested)

    1) TestPortAsicStackPortLoopback ---> .
    2) TestPortAsicLoopback ------------> F
    3) TestPortAsicRingLoopback --------> .
    4) TestPortAsicCam -----------------> .
    5) TestMicRingLoopback -------------> .
    6) TestPortAsicMem -----------------> .
    7) TestInlinePwrCtlr ---------------> .

What does that 'F' imply?

(1) What does this test do?

(2) What does failing this test suggest?

I have ~60 Catalyst 2960X, divided up into ~eight Stacks.  On one particular Stack, I'm seeing various issues ... (intense Layer 2 loops, in which duplicate copies of frames are flooded to all ports ... this is obvious from pcaps, in which packets contain identical IP Ident numbers ... and in volume ... for example, 100,000+ HSRP Hellos in a single second ... each Hello reasonable & expected (sourced from the appropriate IP addresses)).

So, on a whim, I ran GOLD on each switch:

diagnostic start switch 1 test all

and discovered that (2) of the (8) switches in that particular Stack reported this 'F' for TestPortAsicLoopback.  Hmm, perhaps a clue as to what is going on.  Then, I ran GOLD on most of my other Stacks ... and found the same thing:  (21) of the (45) Cat2960X which I tested displayed this 'F' for TestPortAsicLoopback.  As far as I can tell, my other Stacks are running fine.

'F' means fail, and usually indicates a hardware issue.

But with it happening across so many switches perhaps it is a false positive.

TAC tells me that they ignore a Fail on this test when it is run On-Line and investigate when it shows up on POST.

I also note this defect:  https://bst.cloudapps.cisco.com/bugsearch/bug/CSCtl08303/?referring_site=bugquickviewredir, which to my read basically says "someone else has observed this also"

Dear stuartkendrick,

I had the same problem until i've installed c2960s-universalk9-mz.150-2.SE10 ios. After installation this problem didn't occur.

Best Wishes,

Rostom.
