Thoughts from the community on VLANs

Greetings everyone, lets hear your thoughts on what you use your VLANs for and what numbers you prefer to use for what type of setup.

For example, for my native VLANs I use 666 and for my Black-Hole VLAN used for ports that are shutdown I use 999. What do you guys use when it comes to certain departments, VOIP, WiFi etc...

Looking forward to hear your thoughts.

Hi,

I usually use the first vlan for data and the second one for voice. This is done per floor if you have a multi-floor building.

Example:

4th floor subnet 10.10.40.0/24 vlan 400 data

4th floor subnet 10.10.41.0/24 vlan 410 voice

5th floor subnet 10.10.50.0/24 vlan 500 data

5th floor subnet 10.10.51.0/24 vlan 510 voice

and so on...

This way I know if the subnet is .40 the vlan is 400 (you basically add 0 to the subnet).

and the other way around, if the vlan is 400, I know the subnet is 40.

That is indeed a good idea, I've done a form of this as well. It really helps organizing the VLANS and remembering it easier if you're the one who's managing it for sure. Good to hear!
