The one with the higher revision number will be the master's master.

Be careful of this setup.  I've seen VLAN database disappear with this setup.

Hi,

IMHO, VLAN database cleared accidentally is a general danger of VTP, no matter  of the server number.

On the contrary, it had been dangerous in the past to run a single server  in your VTP domain as the VLAN database had been saved on servers only.

This is not valid anymore, but still it's recommended to have multiple VTP servers in the domain as they are only places  to configure the VLAN database.

So if you  decide to run VTP, it's worth having two servers at least.

Assuming both are properly sync'ed to begin with, updating either will update the whole VTP domain.  Recall (?) if both are updated at almost the same time, you can lose one of the server's updates.

VTP server is the default mode. The one with higher cofig-revision number will overwrite the information or in other words, will be the master. But, be very careful while adding servers and clients to your VTP domain. Make very  sure they have a lower rev level or it can cause major issues with your  network. Some people think that a client can't over write a server but  that is incorrect, if your add a VTP client to your domain and it has a  higher rev level it will over write the server.

The best way, is setup the switch in client mode and then change the switch to server mode.

When the switch is in client mode, the switch will be update the version and other parameters (through the switch(es) in server mode), and then change the switch to server mode.

With this procedure there’s nothing to be worry (100% guaranty).

Actually adding a VTP client can "zap" your VLANs  (if its rev number is higher).  The correct way is to set the switch to  transparent mode, which resets the revision, add the switch to the  network, and then setting it to client or server mode as needed.

I don't thing so.

Switch(config)#vtp mode client

Setting device to VTP CLIENT mode.

Switch(config)#vlan 44

VTP VLAN configuration not allowed when device is in CLIENT mode.

Switch(config)#
