trying to load 7604 switch from disk0 howver the switch keeps defaulting to the old ios and each time the "autoboot command:"boot bootdisk". this statement appears to override anyother boot statement. has anyone had this issue if so, what steps were taken in order for the new boot variable to used by the switch.

Its appears to me that switch is not accepting the new bootpath variable. Try deleting the all the boot variable on the switch by using " no boot " command and then add the new boot statement "boot system disk0:file_name.bin"

It should take care of the issue that you having.
