Hello

My understanding routed ports are not supported on the gigabit interfaces

Let me take a slightly different approach than Paul in answering (though I believe that ultimately we are both saying the same thing). By default the gigabit ports on the switch are layer 2 access ports. And it is not possible to configure a layer 2 access port with an IP address. If the switch would accept the command no switchport then it would become a routed port and a routed port can be configured with an IP address. But I am not sure that the 2960 supports this.

Perhaps the best way to get an IP address associated with a gigabit port on the 2960 is to assign the gigabit port to a vlan, to configure a layer 3 vlan interface associated with that vlan, and to assign the IP address to the vlan interface.
