Upgrading Catalyst 3560 firmware

This is my first time upgrading the firmware on this switch.   Unlike the 2960's which are pretty straight forward with the GUI, this one is a lot more complicated.

I have setup a TFTP server on my local Win10 machine and connected to it from the switch GUI, listing my local IP address and the bin file name.   It appears the transfer worked, but then I get this in the progress window of the switch.
Switching, Catalyst 3000
Finished downloading file tftp://XX.XX.XX.XX/cat3k_caa-universalk9.16.09.05.CSCvt70277.SPA.smu.bin to active switch
FAILED: File flash:cat3k_caa-universalk9.16.09.05.CSCvt70277.SPA.smu.bin is corrupt or is not a valid package

Anyone with any ideas.   The bin file was downloaded this morning off Ciscos downloads site

Hello, Why are you using 9.16.09. the recommended MD release is 16.12.5b. Always use MS with shining yellow start.

also. highly recommended using scp instead of tftp (Solar-winds scp free tools). after the ios copied to flash run:

verify /md5 flash:cat3k_caa-universalk9.XXXXX.bin or verify /SHA512 flash:cat3k_caa-universalk9.XXXXX.bin and match it with What in Cisco download link in case of corrupted during the tftp transfer.

Be sure have enough space in flash.

Are you using install mode? if yes use the command below.

install add file flash:cat3k_caa-universalk9.XXXXX.bin activate commit

y

After reboot

sh ver
show install summary
show boot

dir flash:*pkg

after the upgrade done remeber to clean the mess by using: install remove inactive to delete the old packge not used.

Do not, under and circumstances, ever use 16.12.X unless you want to "help Cisco find bugs".

Leo, sorry you are totally wrong. I use 16.12x MD with no issue. Not all 16.12 buggy MD very stable

just make sure we are in the same page Leo.

What are you trying to do?

The file you're trying to "download", cat3k_caa-universalk9.16.09.05.CSCvt70277.SPA.smu.bin, is an IOS-XE SMU for a 3650/3850 platform.  It will not work on classic IOS like the 3560.

What is the best version of IOS to install on an out of support catalyst 3560-24?  It will be used in a small office behind an updated openwrt router with firewall.  It will have VOIP phones and several computers in a vlan, and maybe later add a VPN to some remote servers.

12.2(55)SE train.

Looking here:

https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/ios-nx-os-software/ios-software-releases-12-2-se/series.html

I've not been able to figure out what to use and this page has no downloads either...  How do I get and install 12.2(55)SE train?

This looks promising:

https://software.cisco.com/download/home/282526526/type/280805680/release/12.2.55-SE12

Which of those four would be good for my catalyst 3560-24?  Any of them?

Thanks for spending time on this.

12.2(55)SE12 would be compatible for the 3560-series family of switches.

Download the TAR file.
