Hi all,
am having core switch 4500 series with 2 supervisor engine 7le, i need to configure Virtual Switching System (VSS) via the ether channel.
I notice the ports configured shows active which is ok and ports show inactive status.
Can the VSS be configured in two supervisor engines in the same core switch or it must me in two different switches????
If yes, why the ports shows inactive status???

Hi,
In this case, one supervisor will be the active and the other one the standby hot (SSO) , both sups need to run the same IOS and license, and when using dual sups only the first 2 ports of each supervisor will be active the other ones will be disable if you use 1 gig ports, if you use 10 gig ports just the first port of each sup will be enable. This will be for a standalone switch not VSS mode.

Ok... In that case VSS is not the right feature for you.
You need to configure SSO or RPR as explained in the linke I sent you in the above message.

Hi,
I never saw VSS with 2 Supervisors in one chassis.
Actually this dosen't make sense to me.
If you have two Supervisory in one chassis, you configure Supervisor Engine Redundancy.
If you have two chassis you configure VSS.

Hi Markus,
yep this is a strange situation but i strongly need it and thanks for your help.
It means that it is possible using supervisor redundancy???? Is it the only way???
If Yes, can you guide me to redundancy configuration reference..
thanks

Reading Jose's answer, I am not sure if I understand the situation correctly.
Do you have one chassis with two supervisors or do you have two chassis with a total of four supervisors?
In case you have one chassis and two Sups, you configure it like this:
http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/switches/lan/catalyst4500/12-2/01xo/configuration/guide/config/RPR.html
(btw. I normally use SSO)

Hi,
Quad supervisor VSS on the Catalyst 4500 does not support an "In-Chassis Standby" so the peer supervisors remain in ROMMON and need to be manually booted up in order to accept control plane traffic. You will have two active supervisors and two supervisors that sit in ROMMON and await a manual boot.
That said you will have 2 supervisors per chassis, one will be active and the other will remain in Rommon mode. The ports of the second supervisor will be disable/inactive cause the supervisor is in rommon.

Hope this helps!

Hi Jose,
thanks for your replay, but you explain regarding Quad Supervisors, am having Dual Supervisor Engines in one
Core switch 4500.
Is it the same, the other will be in Rommon??
Can you expalain regarding Dual supervisors in only one core switch.
thanks,
