Using the CLI on console port for the first time.

I bought a Cisco layer-3 switch on ebay for use in a home network to study for the CCNA but am unable to login with a console cable to the switch's console cable port.  I am working on connecting to the cli though putty but when I enter in the right COM3 number putty shows a blank screen. I have setup putty to the correct settings and am using a Oikwan USB to RJ45 Console cable and installed the FTDI drivers from the official website. I check the device manager and the com3 port and USB serial convertor show up but there is a device showing as unknown device.  Not sure what the next steps to troubleshoot would be and this is an 8-port PoE Cisco Catalyst 3560 Switch.  I also used express setup once to set IP address and tried to reset the switch by holding down mode button a few times but now it shows syst and stat as green.  Any help would be great.

-Thanks

Sometime(most time) ebay stuff do not work as expected, this may bad switch, If there is no console output. (and you sure console working other device), then the device may be faulty.

is this 3560X mode or OLD 3560 ?

Power down the switch. Once the switch is powered off, hold down the mode button, and power the switch on. The switch will boot up and you should see the switch:

Wow that worked I have output on my putty screen now thanks, will I have to hold the mode button down every time I login with putty?  Also I think it must be the older option you listed since it was about 40 bucks.

-Thanks

No you do not need to , we use that button to make it Factory reset, lost password and other reasons.
