Video Cameras on LAN

Dear Cisco Support Team,

We are working on a design to propose 100 IP Cameras in a Factory environment. The customer has raised a concern regarding reliability and availability of Switches when all of its 24 ports or 48 ports are connected with IP Cameras. What will be the CPU Utilization in that condition and which switches whould be proposed to cater such a situation.

Can anyone of you help me with that?

Regards,

Farhan.

CPU utilisation will not be a problem. The speed of the uplink cable(s) to the outside world might be. Try comparing the 3750X series of switches with your requirements. If the cameras only require FastEthernet (100 Mbit/s) go for a 3750 with 48 FastEthernet ports and 2 GigabitEthernet uplinks. Choose if uplinks are UTP, Fibre, or SFP based (SFP requires extra purchase of SFP to UTP or SFP to Fibre convertor). If your cameras are Gigabit capable, then make sure switch model is Gigabit on every port. For reliabilty use 2 * 24 port 3750X's joined with a pair of stacker cables, rather than one 48 port.

Answer would depend on how much traffic each video camera generates and what particular switch you're reviewing.  Some switches have the capacity to run all their ports, concurrently, as full capacity.

As the other poster has also noted, most common issue would be congestion on a shared link.
