Hi,
I don?t have access to second level password, and need to design a network.
The two cisco 2610XM Router Details are -
IOS (tm) C2600 Software (C2600-I-M), Version 12.1(16), RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1)
Copyright (c) 1986-2002 by cisco Systems, Inc.
I am confused with the redundancy protocol used in this router.
with command - show standby
i got following output -
R1>sh standby
FastEthernet0/0 - Group 0
Local state is Active, priority 200, may preempt
Hellotime 3 sec, holdtime 10 sec
Next hello sent in 0.526
Virtual IP address is xx.xx.xx.3 configured
Active router is local
Standby router is xx.xx.xx.2 expires in 9.636
Virtual mac address is 0000.0c07.aa00
5 state changes, last state change 1d11h
Priority tracking 1 interface, 1 up:
Interface Decrement State
Serial0/0 20 Up
but as per my observation Whenever HSRP is configured output shows a line -
Hot standby IP address is xx.xx.xx.xx configured
But my output shows a line -
Virtual IP address is xx.xx.xx.xx configured
Not able to make out if HSRP or VRRP.
Is output differ due to IOS Version.
Please Help

Hi Friend,
I believe its HSRP but before confirming you can you reconfirm me the same output and check the virtual mac address in the same output
Virtual mac address is 0000.0c07.aa00
You posted 0000.0c07.aa00 but I believe it will be 0000.0c07.ac00, so please reconfirm.
07.ac is virtual mac address signfies it is Cisco prop HSRP mac address.

Hi Himanshu,
So now its confirm that HSRP is been configured looking at the virtual mac address.
Now as far as teh output is concern it may be IOS specific because in all latest IOS on L3 switches I see Virtual IP address instead of Host Standby IP Address.
From the virtual mac address which is 0000.0c07.ac00, 07.ac signifies it is Cisco HSRP Mac Addrses and 2 numbers tells you the HSRP group number which is 0 in your case.

Yes the Virtual mac address is 0000.0c07.ac00,
This means the output is because of Cisco IOS version ? / because other IOS version gives output-
Hot standby IP address is xx.xx.xx.xx configured.
Can you provide me more detail on the same.
Thanks

Thanks for the information provided,
Is there default Virtual MAC address for VRRP also.

Hi Himanshu,
The virtual router MAC address associated with a virtual router is an IEEE 802 MAC Address in the following format:
00-00-5E-00-01-{VRID}
The first three octets are derived from the IANA's OUI.
The next two octets (00-01) indicate the address block assigned to the VRRP protocol.
{VRID} is the VRRP Virtual Router identifier.
This mapping provides for up to 255 VRRP routers on a network.
I have myself not done much research on VRRP so to get more details on its operation you can read this link
http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc2338.html
Section 7.3 talks about Virtual Mac Address
