I always found this forum very helpful, thanks to you team.
Currently facing one challenge. I have 2 nos of 6506 switch with Dual SUP((VS-S720-10G-3C)) Engine each, after VSS configuration when i performed Active SUP Failover on Active chassis in VSS that switch restart itself and standby VSS became Active. Please let me know is that any way to provide local failover on Standby SUP rather than restarting entire chassis? If so then please let me know prerequisite, details procedure for the same. Currently i have IP Services IOS 12.x version.
In case i need to upgrade IOS then do i need to contact cisco licensing team to reissue my current permanent IP Services license or after upgrading IOS my current license will work with new IOS and doesn't need to contact Cisco Licensing team for the same?
Your reply will be appreciated.

Hi,
The described behaviour is as expected when issuing the "redundancy force-switchover" command. The same applies for the latest IOS release for your Sup720 ie. 15.1SY and this is also expected behaviour for Sup2T.
There is also the "redundancy reload peer" command available, which reloads the VSS standby chassis only and brings it back online.
Best regards,
Antonin

Thanks Antonin,
I have removed primary SUP which is as good as "redundancy force-switchover command and upgraded IOS to 15.1SY and observed same behaviour. There is no other way to stop this behaviour as like single chassis provide subsecond outage when primary SUP goes down????
and after upgrading IOS from 12.x to 15.x SY will it have any impact on my IOS licensing???

Hi,
Thanks for the feedback. I am sorry to say that I am not aware of any way to stop the behaviour in question. As for your licensing concern my view is that if you stay within the feature set you do not need additional licence. Cisco Licensing Best Practices include also this rule:
•Pay an additional fee to upgrade to a new feature set—upgrades require new license. No additional fee is due when the feature set stays the same—updates require no new license.
Best regards,
Antonin
