VTP mode client.

Hi ,

I have 6500 switch on that there  are about 30 vlan .which is in vtp mode server.

I have another switch such as 3550 which i have made as vtp. mode client and it is connected to 6500

on 3550 there are 48 ports and out ot them i have made 40 ports as trunk.

My question  is does 3500 can have impact on network .

Hi,

Yes it can as long as it has a higher revision number than the other switches.

To reset configuration number you can:

1) change to vtp mode transparent then back to client

2) change vtp domain name then back to the correct one

As it is in client mode it is having the same revision number.

My point is 3550 is having 40 port trunk and that trunk port is connected to ESX enclosure whre blade servers are implemented.so thus it have any redudancy issue on these switches.

then  imho only impact would be on spanning-tree if you had a redundant setup.

Hi prashant,

++ You can allow only interested vlans on the trunk so that the unwanted traffic flow can be avoided.

++ Configure vtp pruning.

++ If you feel the end devices are not going to participate in spanning tree then you can configure port-fast along with bpdu filter.

spanning-tree portfast trunk

spanning-tree bpdu filter enable.

Besides this i believe everything should work normal on this switch.
