VTP Modes client and Server -- SVI Vlan

Hi all,

Here is the setup.

Say we have Switch A  as VTP server mode.

It has vlan 10 only  but not any SVI  vlan 10.

It has conenction to switch B  which is VTP  client mode.

This switch has  SVI  vlan 10.

Is this design ok?

normally VTP client gets updates from server.

Does in this case also Switch B  with SVI  vlan 10 gets updates from Switch A ?

Regards

Mahesh

Hi Mahesh,

Is this design ok?

Yes, that is ok.  As a matter of fact, you can for example have vlan 10 in 5 different switches and have an SVI in each switch with IP address in the same subnet.  That is actually how inband managment for layer-2 devices is done.

So, vlan 10 on switch-1 is 192.168.10.1, on switch 2 is 192.168.10.2 and switch 3 is 192.168.10.3, etc...

normally VTP client gets updates from server.

Yes, the VTP server/client works the same way whether or not there is an SVI with IP on the switch.

VTP is layer-2 and the server propegate vlans to clients.

Hello
All depends on the vtp revision number doesn't matter if its a server or client - either can update the vtp database.
The Higher the revision number takes precedence

Hi Paul,

It also depend on revision  number also as if client has higher revision it can update the database.

Thanks for replying the question.

Hi Reza,

Thanks again for confirming my thoughts.

There is so much in network world everyday you learn some new concepts.

Hello
yes that is correct unless you use vtp3 then only the vtp primary can update the vtp database
