Hi Dear ALL,
i have serval vtp questions.
1.if vtp prunning downstream switch, Does vlan information still exist on downstream switch, or prunning vlan information are deleted.
2.if vlan information update to another vtp server/client, does this new vlan information saved automactilly into NVRAM?????
2, if one new switch add to network, revision number is higher, the whole vlan information are refreshed by this switch, we remove this new switch. does I need to reconfig all vlan information on vtp server? can we just reboot old vtp server to recover?
thank you!

Hi,
1.if vtp prunning downstream switch, Does vlan information still exist on downstream switch, or prunning vlan information are deleted.
VTP prune is a feature to set of the vlans only can transfer on the trunk link. And it will not change the VLAN database.
2.if vlan information update to another vtp server/client, does this new vlan information saved automactilly into NVRAM?????
If any client get update from VTP server that update will get update in the client vlan.dat file.
2, if one new switch add to network, revision number is higher, the whole vlan information are refreshed by this switch, we remove this new switch. does I need to reconfig all vlan information on vtp server? can we just reboot old vtp server to recover?
If you removed removed the existing VTP server and looking to bringing up the old VTP server then you need to configure all the required vlans in the new VTP server.

1. No, it is not exist on downstream switch.
2. It is saved to vlan.dat what can be stored on flash.
3. Yes, you need to reconfigure it again. Reboot will not be helpful.

Hi Eugene,
1. No, it is not exist on downstream switch.
VTP pruning doesn't change the VLAN database on switches it just refrains from sending frames on trunk for VLANS that don't exist at the other end of the links.

umm. lets say the new vtp server gave out vlan 10, vlan 20, vlan 30. and the old vtp server had vlan 40, vlan 50.
once the new vtp server is taken out and the old one is plugged back into the network. what happens to the vlan.dat on the client swiches then?
if you can explain that will be good .I would interested to knwo as well.

Kishore

Kishore,
I have not simulated it yet but I think the vlan.dat file will be changed with the new vlan database when the new vtp server come online.

i think when old vtp server is plugged back to network, the revision number of switch on network currently is higher than old vtp server, the old vtp server will be refreshed by switch on network. if there is no vtp server on network, vtp client can also refresh old vtp server
another question , if vlan information is saved in config file ,not in vlan.dat. will these vlan information be refreshed by vtp server and auto saved in config .
i rememeber vtp just only refresh 1-1002 vlan , not above it.
