VTP Setup

We just purchased 2 new 3750 Switches and 10 2960 switches and we have a Nortel switch for VOIP. The two 3750 switches will be stacked and it will bbe connecting to all the other switches. We have one data vlan and 3 VOIP vlans. Is VTP recommended on this scenerio?

Any help will be greatly appreciated?

Thanks,

Lake

No not really , vtp is a time saver if you have a large amount switches and  vlans   and users are constantly moving around .  With only 10 switches and 4 vlans I would say transparent mode is the way to go.

Firstly, VTP is Cisco proprietary so you would have to add the vlans manually to the Nortel switch.

As for the Cisco switches you could either -

1) set the 3750 switch stack to be VTP server and the 2960 switches to be VTP clients. Set the domain name on the VTP server and this will cause the VTP server to being VTP advertisements. Assuming the 290s are connected via trunks the 2960s should pick up the VTP advertisements.

or

2) set up each switch as VTP transparent and manually create the vlans on each switch.

Which to use is really a decision only you can make.

The main advantage of VTP server/client is that you only need to add the vlans to the VTP server and they will get propogated to the clients. The downside is that when adding new switches you can accidentally overwrite the VTP database if you are not careful. Also as soon as you add a vlan it is automatically sent to all other switches whether they need it or not. This can be controlled by pruning/allowing vlans on the trunk.

The main advantage of VTP transparent is that is more secure and gives you more control over the each switch and it's vlan database. You cannot overwrite the VTP database on a particular switch by adding a new one.

If you have a network where you are often adding or removing vlans then VTP server/client can save a lot of time. If you have a network where your vlans are fairly stable then VTP transparent is an option.

But as i say it really is your decision to make.

Awesome!

We won't be constantly adding and removing vlans so i think it is recommendable to use VTP transparent mode but i will give it some more thought.

I truly appreciacte all your help guys.

Thanks,
