Are you referring to the B/B line coding ?
As far as I remember, 100Mbps Ethernet uses 4B/5B line coding, which basically means that 4 bits of data are represented using 5 bits. Gigabit Ethernet uses the same concept, but 8B/10B (again,
8 bits of data represented as 10 bits)
