Will IE-3300-8T2S-E support IEC 60870-5-104

I would like to get a confirmation that IE-3300-8T2S-E will support IEC 60870-5-104 and IEC 61850 communication protocols. I found in datasheet about IEC 61850. But coudnt find any documentation/datasheet that it will support IEC 60870-5-104. I read it somewhere it can manage this protocol also. But i need any documentation proof in order to get approval

 -  If it not mentioned in the datasheet ( IEC 60870-5-104) then it is not supported ; could you provide those references where you found it might be supported (?)

I found this on some article:

The Cisco IE-3300-8T2S-E switch itself does not directly implement the IEC 60870-5-104 protocol, which is a standard for telecontrol in electrical engineering and power system automation. However, it can support the transmission of data using this protocol over the network.

The primary role of the Cisco IE-3300-8T2S-E in an IEC 60870-5-104 environment is to provide robust and reliable network infrastructure. It ensures that devices and systems using the IEC 60870-5-104 protocol can communicate effectively over an IP network. Key features of the switch that support such environments include:

High Availability and Redundancy: The switch supports various protocols and features to ensure network redundancy and uptime, which are critical in power system automation.

Security: It offers comprehensive security features to protect the network from unauthorized access and cyber threats.

Quality of Service (QoS): QoS features prioritize critical traffic, which is important for the reliable transmission of control and monitoring data in IEC 60870-5-104 networks.

Time Synchronization: While the IEC 60870-5-104 protocol doesn't inherently require precision time synchronization, the IE-3300 series supports IEEE 1588 PTP, which could be useful in environments where accurate time stamping of events is necessary.

To implement IEC 60870-5-104, the actual protocol handling is typically done by specialized devices or software systems, such as Remote Terminal Units (RTUs), gateways, or SCADA systems, which connect to the network provided by the Cisco switch. The switch then ensures the reliable and secure transport of the protocol data across the network.

@fawazhanif i guess you used this document to get information. check if this helps

Thanks for your support.

Actually i need this document to get some approval from client. So, in the document the specific model number should be mentioned. Here in this document its mentioning about IEC 60870-5-104 protocol in case of FirePower software.

Hello @fawazhanif ,

if the protocol runs over IP over ethernet

>> It ensures that devices and systems using the IEC 60870-5-104 protocol can communicate effectively over an IP network. Key features of the switch that support such environments include:

The IE3300 acting as a L2 LAN switch does not need to know the protocol to bridge it.

For a Firepower that needs to be able to inspect the protocol to make intelligent decisions using IPS it needs to know it . That is the difference.

>> Reliable operation - HW Bypass, Dual power inputs (ISA-3000)

on slide 54 of the cisco live presentation provided by @Kasun Bandara

The ISA 3000 is actually an OT version of firepower but it is not a L2 switch like the IE3000.

Hope to help
