How to request missing Visio stencils?

There are several Visio stencils that are missing from the library that I need. They're important to me (and I imagine others want them too) as I need to do rack elevation diagrams. I hate to open a TAC case on them but not sure what else to do. Any thoughts?

The stencils I require are:

ASA5510 (Rear view - the side with the interfaces)

ME-C6524GT-8S (Rear view - the side with the power supplies) - 24 Ethernet - 10/100/1000 interfaces + 8 Gigabit Ethernet SFP uplinks, 1 fan tray

PWR-400W-AC - 400W AC power supply for the Cisco ME 6524

PWR-400W-DC - 400W DC power supply for the Cisco ME 6524

ME-C3750-24TE-M (Rear View - the side with the power supplies) - Cisco Catalyst 3750 Metro

PWR-ME3750-AC - Cisco Catalyst 3750 Metro Switch Primary AC power supply

PWR-ME3750-DC - Cisco Catalyst 3750 Metro Switch Primary AC power supply

Cheers

Hi Peter,

I'm still trying to get authorization to develop missing Visio icons for 800 series products.  I wish I could tell you if and when they might be available but it all depends on the product group's response.

Hi Brett, I am in need of the following stencils:

WS-C3750X-24S-S (The front view with the interfaces)

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks & Regards

Hi Arie,

Just an update...

I've contacted the product group several times about the Visio icons you need and so far have not received authorization to create them.  I just tried again today so hopefully there will be a positive response.

Looking for a few stencils. I think they were in older versions of the .zip file but no longer show up as active in the list:

IPS 4255

WS-X6K-SUP2-2GE

Any help is appreciated in either the form of those shapes or a step by step "how to modify" an existing shape to the shape you need.

Hi Umberto,

The "all products" file is out of date due to the size that it's grown to.  We are trying to come up with a way to segment it into smaller files but honestly we have not gotten to that yet.  The most current files are in the individual listings.

I assume you mean IDS 4255 and that is in the Security-Cisco IDS download.

We were not asked by the product group to produce the WS-X6K-SUP2-2GE so it is not in the file. I can ask them if they will fund the missing card but it may take some time.

As for modifying the existing shapes, that is not an easy task because you will lose the smart behaviors that are programmed into these shapes. The images are actually enhanced metafile images within a Visio group.  Ungrouping will disassemble them but the results will probably not be so great.  We convert the original Visio drawings to metafiles to improve performance significantly.  They would be very sluggish if we kept them as Visio geometry.  I honestly cannot get into a step by step procedure here because there is no guaranteed method that will ensure good editing results. I assure you that I'm not dodging the subject... it's just not straightforward.  Even I could not edit the shapes successfully.  We go back to the original Visio drawings to make changes and then process them into the metafile form as well as program the behaviors like snapping to the rack accurately, text labels, hyperlinks to product info, etc.

I hope this is understandable although not the response you were hoping for.

Brett-
Thanks for the reply. Actually, the 4255 is not  in the shape file you sent via email. There are only two devices in that shape  file with a front and back view of each (4215 & 4260). I have  attached a picture of the 4255 for your review. You can see from that  picture that this part is not even close to the 4215 & 4260. It is  almost identical to the ASA 5510 in the same rack above it in the  attached picture. This is why I asked if I could simply edit the ASA  5510 and turn it into a 4255.

The WS-X6K-SUP2-2GE is very close to some other supervisor cards in the templates. Just not a match.

Umberto

Hi Uberto,

I apologize... the stencil I mentioned was never updated after we took over Visio production at Cisco in 2008.  We have some of those drawings partially completed but never finished because the product group put the project on hold and it seems it just remained in that state and it slipped by me.  I will see if I can gather the remaining information we need to complete them.

Hi Brett,

Maybe I am missing this, but have you attempted to produce a stencil of all known SFP, SFP+, QSPF+ and CPAK transcievers?  I'm in the midst of building an entire new data center and Visio offers a way to visually devlop a bill of materials by drawing it out then reporting against the inventory of the file which reduces errors, if you need a business case.

Additionally you are missing some blanks and N6004-B-24Q (24 port fixed) in the Nexus 6000 stencil.  I also found that N2K-C2248PQ is missing in the Nexus 2000 stencil.

-Patrick

Hi Patrick,

We were not asked to create the N6004-B-24Q so it's not on the N6K stencil. We can only produce what the product group requests and funds... they sometimes forget specific products. They have just asked for several others so I will mention that this was just requested by a customer and perhaps we can add it to the project.

We don't have individual shapes of all transceivers. We have our own library of generic port types that we use to construct the various devices in Visio but we do not get to the level of detail where end users can insert transceivers with various part numbers.

We are very familiar with generating bill of materials reporst from Visio and in fact we have an add-on called QuotePix for purchase that gives you more flexibility in reporting output. You may be fine with Visio's built in reports but it has some limitations. If you are interested, you can go to www.shapesouce.com to see the QuotePix product. If it looks intriguing send me an email at brettn@visimaiton.com and I'll send you more details in PDF form to help you decide if it's worth buying in your case.

I can suggest a way for you to set up your drawings to apply specfic tranceiver part numbers to the various slots for them on the Cisco shapes. I'm going to assume you have sufficient experience with Visio because I can't get into a deep tutorial here, of course:

  1. Create your own "tranceiver" shape for each of the types you listed. They will be different sizes which is why I suggest a separate master shape for each. Store them on a "Tranceivers" stencil.
  2. Apply Shape Data to each of them, for example
    • Type
    • Part Number
    • Manufacturer
    • Description?
    • Other?
  3. Fill them with a color of your choice, and make them about 50% transparent
  4. Save them on the stencil
  5. Drag one to cover as existing port slot
  6. In the Shape Data, enter the part number
  7. Copy/Paste as many as you need so they will all have the part number in the Shape Data
  8. Run your Visio report and if it's set up correctly, the transceivers should appear.

I hope this is helpful.

Brett,

Thank you for the suggestion, I actually started doing the custom transciever shapes on my own, the other data will help and I will take a look at your product.

What about the N2K-C2248PQ, if you don't have an order for that one make sure to bring it up when you mention the missing 6K.

Hi Patrick,

The N2K-C2248PQ is now in our work queue pending funding approval.

Hi Brett,

Do you have a visio stencil for the C4500-X rear (with power supply)? I only see front views from the Cisco site. Or is there a product stencil similar to the C4500-X rear?

Thanks.

Regards,

Riann

Hi Riann,

I'm sorry, we do not have rears of the 4500-X. The product group authorized funding for just the front views. I don't know what other models might be similar since I don't have pictures of the 4500-X rear.  I wish I could be more helpful.

Brett,

Do you know if Secure Access Control Server will get Visio stencils?

Thanks in advance,
