Is it possible to plug a standard HDMI connector from a video source into the camera input connector of an SX20 without using the camera control?
If yes, do I need to adjust some settings?

You should be able to just use the HDMI port without any configuration needed, I think both the HDMI and VISCA camera control ports are separate and behave as individual inputs.

If using a TelePresence camera, you can control it with the remote through it's IR sensor.
Note, since the camera control cable isn't connected between the SX20 and camera, you won't be able to control the codec through the camera, you'll need to control the SX20 using it's own IR sensor.

Yes. There should be no problem when connecting a video source on the HDMI input on the codec. As Patrick mentioned, the camera control port is independent with the HDMI. On the SX20 codec, the HDMI and camera control port looks like one port but they have no connection with each other. Cisco designed it that way for compact designed and for cable management.
The only settings you need to adjust are the video resolution/quality that will need to support. Take a look at Cisco TelePresence SX20 Quick Set Administrator Guide on page 113.
