When building a traversal zone between VCScc and VCSew does it matter if VCScc has sw. X4.x and VCSew has sw X8.1.1?

I can't remember if there was a thing back in the day when we upgrade to x5 that both VCS Control and Expressway had to be upgraded as a pair. So you may have an issue in this case.
FYI, personally, we have run some basic single call tests with X8.1 to x7.2.2 (with either software on both VCS-C and E and vice versa) and we have seen no issues.

Although Chris has done so as below, the official documentations says both VCS-C and VCS-E have to be upgraded to X8.1 at the same time.
The documentation says that the VCS-C needs to be upgraded to at least version X5.1.1 though to talk with a X7+ VCS-E, so your X4.x VCS-C won't work.
You will need to perform a stepped upgrade if upgrading the old VCS-C: X4 -> X5.2 -> X6.1 -> X7+.(as per the release notes).

And to follow up on this and on my original post, just because this simplistic test works for us, it is in no way any kind or recommendation. Ensure you conduct your own tests or stick the Cisco recommended practices. This was merely an observation based on an empirical test which seem to go against the Cisco statement.
Cheers,

The X8.1.1 Release Notes now say (Page 17) that you can have a mix of versions over your traversal zone, but only to the previous major release - so that'd still mean that you need to be on X7.x to talk with X8.1.1, so, as before, you'll definitely need to upgrade your X4.x VCS.

The main question should be, why do you want or need to be on X4?
