C20 / C40 Content Resolution Issues

Our Video Infrastructure:

VCS - Version 8.1.1

MCU 4510 and 4501

Endpoints: C20s and C40s - - - All version TC6.0.1

All endpoints have NaturalPresenter, PremiumResolution, DualDisplay

All conferences are scheduled using TMS PE. Participants connect to either MCU for each call.

The issue: Presentation quality is very poor when connecting laptop to the C20/C40 to show a presentation. The attachment shows the Transmit Resolution from a C40 to be 1280x720@8HZ while the Receive Resolution on a participating C40 and C20 was only 1280x720@1 or 2 HZ.

Why is it so low? Anyone have any suggestions on how to improve the quality?

We use the TMS PE client to book the conferences. The default settings I have set are as follows:

Picture Mode: Enhanced CP

IP Bandwidth: 768 kbps

Content Mode:  Transcoded

"Sharpness" mode being used.

Thanks.

Firstly, this question would be better located in the TelePresence section rather than the Video Over IP section - you may wish to move your discussion.

Secondly, TC6.0.1 is quite old, and subject to a number of critical security vulnerabilities - it's highly recommended that you upgrade to at least TC7.1.4 to address these.

But to assist with your query - the "Sharpness" mode you are using gives priority to the resolution of your presentation, if you want more frames per second, you'll need to use "Motion" (at the tradeoff of less resolution).

If the video source isn't changing, then the endpoint may only need to send 1 or 2 updates a second, so seeing a low Hz number isn't necessarily an issue.

The Conference 1 VideoBandwidth settings (Mode, MainChannel Weight, PresentationChannel Weight) can also have a significant impact.

A couple of thoughts here - the MCU is capable of 1080p content (using H.264), but it can't control what your PC video output is set to, so if the laptop port is set to 720p that's as good as it can be. Also the C20 is not capable of 1080p content, so if your C40 was set to send a higher resolution, the C20 cannot send or receive higher than WXGA (1280x768) which is roughly equivalent to what you are seeing (note this is the same as the SX10 if you get any of those going forward). As for the frame rate, check the settings Wayne suggested about content channel weight. Another suggestion would be to set the content mode to hybrid - let the content pass through when it can and only transcode when you need to. On your conference template, set the mode to hybrid, codec to automatic, and resolutions to allow all.

Also I agree with Wayne's suggestion to upgrade to (at least) 7.1.4, between the security differences, some feature differences, camera updates, you will be better off going forward.

Hope this helps!
