Team,

Dummy question here. What is the difference between analog gateways and ATA devices? I have been searching on the internet but unable to find something will make things clear for me.

Thank you.

Port density, mostly. The ATA is a dumb terminal, just like an IP Phone. The VG hardware are essentially IOS-XE routers with a full CLI, although they can also be managed from CUCM if using MGCP or SCCP. Some VG models have a couple E-FXS ports for longer runs (eg out to a security gate) but that’s a bit of a corner case.

Thanks Jonathan for the comment.

So, beside having more ports and control, the goal is same - connecting dumb device to VOIP network. can be ATA or analog VG.

is this what you mean?

Yes, at a basic level either device offers an FXS port for a generic analog device. The VG hardware is also better suited for an IDF since it can be rack mounted.
