Configuration Steps to be followed:
To enable an external directory resource on supported Cisco Unified IP phones and disable local directory services on those same phones, perform the following steps.
Prerequisites
To use a Cisco Unified Communications Manager directory as an external directory source for Cisco Unified CME phones, the Cisco Unified Communications Manager must be made aware of the phones. You must list the MAC addresses of the Cisco Unified CME phones in the Cisco Unified Communications Manager and reset the phones from the Cisco Unified Communications Manager. It is not necessary for you to assign ephone-dns to the phones or for the phones to register with Cisco Unified Communications Manager.
Restrictions
Provisioning of the directory URL to select an external directory resource disables the Cisco Unified CME local directory service.
SUMMARY STEPS
1. enable
2. configure terminal
3. telephony -service
4. url directories url (url directories http://10.10.X.X:8080/ccmcip/xmldirectory.jsp)
5. end
Challenges Faced:
1. Corporate Directory option is not showing on 7945 series IP Phones.
2. “Host name not found error” while pressing Corporate Directory.
3. Duplication of menu options like Missed/Received/Placed Call while pressing Corporate Directory.
Trouble Shooting Steps:
To isolate the issue if it pertaining only to 7945 series phone, asked the customer to check if 7937 series phone is facing any issue. They confirmed that 7937 series phone corporate directory is working fine.
We registered a 7940 Phone on the France CME and this is working fine.
CIPC (Soft phones) at France is also working fine.
Took the Cisco call manager IP Phone Services logs from the RTMT tools
Since issue is pertaining only with 7945 phone model, we have decided to upgrade the phone firm ware from SCCP45.8-4-2S to SCCP45.8-5-2S. But issue still persists.
Changed the Service Provisioning from Both to Internal (service parameter)
Post the change Corporate Directory started showing in the 7945 phone series. However when they select this option they were getting ‘Host not Found’ error.
Since ‘Host not Found’ error” is related to DNS, did the below change to avoid the DNS resiliency.
Phone services-->Corporate Directoy(phone service)-->chaged Service URL "http://10.10.x.x:8080/ccmcip/xmldirectoryinput.jsp"
downgrade the 7945 firmware to an older version (SCCP45.8-3-5S) previous to the original one.
Post the change, duplication of options issue got resolved.

So the answer to this problem is to downgrade the firmware to 8.3.5S to get rid of the duplicate entries? Doesn't seem like a good solution to me.

We had a TAC for this and Cisco Engg recomended to degrde the firmware
version for 7945 phones. We had done that and got fixed the issue.
Thnx,
