2 node subcluster, ccm 6.x, cup7.x - users in active active mode. When primary CUP server is failed the CUPC client's that were connected to it manage to connect to the secondary server but we do not get presence availabilty updates i.e on hook/ off hook. Connect the pub back and everything works again. Users originally on the sub have no interference.

onhook/offhook status was from CUCM. In order to support CUP failover, you need to configure CUCM to use DNS SRV record in SIP trunk config.

hi Michael, In CCM we have 2 trunks - one to cupnd1 and one to cupnd2 - is that right or should we just have the one trunk to a dns srv record that includes both cupnd1 and cupnd2 or just one trunk to the cup publisher ?

You can't do that.
In CUCM > System > Service Parameters > Cisco CallManager, there's a parameter called "CUP publish trunk". This parameter can only be configured with one trunk.
You need to use SRV record.
