I have one directory handler set up in unity and it has the ext 555 assigned to it. We had never tried to dial the directory handler directly befor I made some changes to IPCC that did a transfer to 555.
Interestingly enough 555 isn't a dn in call manager. As a quick fix I put in a cti route point to point the extension to our auto attendant.
How do I get the dn 555 to the directory handler?

Hi -
Here is a good Cisco link on directory handler settings - http://www.cisco.com/en/US/customer/products/sw/voicesw/ps2237/products_administration_guide_chapter09186a008022d1d5.html
Under the section Creating Directory Handlers, you will see the recommendation "Because directory handlers do not have greetings, use call handlers or one-key dialing to route callers to a directory handler, and use the call handler greeting to explain caller options for each directory handler." We likewise cannot dial 555 directly, however you can dial the backdoor to Unity and reach the Opening Greeting and dial 555 from there to reach the default directory handler. In our Opening Greeting, we have one-key dialing the * to reach the Directory Handler, rather than prompting the user to enter 555. If your auto attendant is configured in Unity, you can include in the greeting the key for callers to press to reach the directory. Then go to the Caller Input section and configure the Action for the key you want to select the directory handler.

I'm not entirely sure what you're asking about - you mean you want to change the prompts for how to spell the name (i.e. first vs. last, and how many letter to enter)? If so, you can get some alternate system prompts for the directry handler conversation here:
http://www.ciscounitytools.com/App_AlternativeDirectoryHandlerPrompts.htm
As Ginger notes, however, these changes are over written during upgrades so you'll have to reapply the prompts you like after you upgrade.
If that's not what you were gunning for, let me know...

I created a call handler for 555 and set the cti route point transfer directly to the extensions greetings.
I then set the standard greeting to blank and then set the greeting to transfer to the directory handler.
It works out Great!
Is there any way to disable the pre-recorded message for the handler so I can record our own message to explain the dialing patterns fir the directory service?

Hi again -
I believe this system prompt, I'm not sure what the filename is, could be replaced with your own wav file, but upon Unity upgrade would be restored to the default. I know other Unity support specialists have asked to change system prompts, from reading the forum entries, but I don't think it's supported by Cisco. Another option would be to revert the blank standard greeting back to a recorded greeting where you give the caller instructions on dialing patterns for the directory service prior to routing them to the directory handler. Perhaps another forum expert will be able to advise further?
