Hello,
I'm doing Unity 404 UM installed on Win Server 2003, off box Exchange 2003 SP-1, CCM 4.0.2a I've done a number of installs selecting G711 so very comfortable with that but never done a 729 install.
The customer would like to use G729. during the install. I'm wondering if there are any issues related and or requirements I should be aware of?
Also, does the IP phone to the transcoding {711 to 729} from Call Manager to Unity or do I need external hardware transcoding resources?
Can I quickly set it back to 711 if the customer is not happy with the sound quality of the voice mail?
Or anything that is out of the ordinary you may know of?
Thank you.

During call setup the SCCP (Skinny) endpoints (Unity/IP Phone) tell CallManager which codec(s) they support. CallManager then negotiates the codec and tells the endpoints which one to use during the call. If CallManager tells it to use g.711ulaw and the prompts are in g.729br8, then Unity will software transcode the file to g.711ulaw and put it on the wire.
The theory on having second prompt sets in g.729 is that if all calls are going to be in g.729 it doesn't make sense for Unity to have to transcode every single call.
So unless the customer is planning on having more than half the calls be g.729 calls there is no reason to install g.729 prompts.
You can switch back to g.711 prompts by rerunning setup.
Thanks,
Keith

Keith,
Thank you very much. I will pass this information to the customer and recommend staying with G711.
