If you have a system with mirrored drives just pl one of the drives out before you do the upgrade. If things go awry you can just take the upgraded drive out and out and boot with the drive you pulled out.
This is also a good D/R practice. I like to setup 3 drives in a rotation. 2 mirrored drives in the unit then I pull one drive and store it away and put the 3rd drive in. Let it build up and then when done I can boot from the 3rd drive on the same server should both drives be lost or I can boot from an identical replacement server.
Another option would be DiRT, the official back-up method for Unity.
