Cisco Unity Connection, VM, no network connectivity

Hello.

I have created a virtual machine (VM) via "VSphere Client" and installed "Cisco Unity Connection" on this VM.

At the end of the installation, a "Network Connectivity Check" is performed and fails as can be seen in the screenshot below.

During the installation a gave an IP, a subnet mask and a gateway (GW) to the VM.
This IP is even pingable from the "ESXi host" but not from the gateway (GW).

I am stuck with the screen below.

How can I solve the problem?

Thank you for helping me.
Best regards.

Greetings.

I sounds like your local vswitch connectivity is working (i.e. allowing vmk0 mgmt and guestVM to talk, as I'm assuming they are probably in the same subnet), but I'm guessing something is not correctly setup with either your vswitch /port group VLAN tag, or the way your physical switch port config is setup (i.e. switch port with allowed vlan, or access port with right vlan, etc)

How is your physical switch port configured (trunk, or access)?

If it's trunk, make sure the matching vlan ID is set in in the mgmt VMK0 vlan field, as well as the portgroup (that your unity guest VM network nic uses) vlan ID.

Thanks,

Kirk...

Hello.

Kirk> I'm assuming they are probably in the same subnet

Yes indeed. Let's say vmk0's IP is 192.168.X.A and the VM's IP is 192.168.X.B with a netmask 255.255.255.0. And the gateway's (GW) IP is 192.168.X.C with a netmask 255.255.255.0.

I didn't set or change any VLANs.
The settings that there are, are the default settings for an ESXi host as far as VLANs are concerned.

esxi-host# esxcli network vswitch standard portgroup list
Name Virtual Switch Active Clients VLAN ID
------------------ -------------- -------------- -------
Management Network vSwitch0 1 0
VM Network vSwitch0 1 0

Kirk> How is your physical switch port configured (trunk, or access)?

Access.

Is there a command in ESXi shell that shows the interface and the IP associated to the VM?

Because of this network connectivity issue, the Unity Connection server installation fails and I have the message: "Installation failed. Restart install to recover from failure."

I already did it twice and it's not a short time installation...

Before I installed the Unity Connection server should I have prepared the ESXi host in some way?

Thank you and best regards.

Are you learning the VMK0 and guestVM mac addresses on the physical switch port?

#show mac address-table

You should see the mac of the NIC/NICs you are using for the vswitch uplinks that gets inherited by VMK0, and some 0050.... address for the Unity VM mac.

If you see those,, then there is an issue with the SVI for that VLAN, default gateway,  something going on at your physical switch level.

Thanks,

Kirk...

Hello.
Sorry for my late answer.

I don't understand this sentence.
The final architecture of my system is the following:
- an ISR4331,

- an UCS E-Series module plugged into the ISR (UCSE),

- a VMware ESXi host installed on the UCSE,

- a Cisco Unity Connection virtual machine (VM) installed in the ESXi host.
Of course, at this point, the VM is not installed which is the reason why I am posting.
In the ISR4331, there is a ucse 0/1/0 interface,

- which corresponds to the UCSE GE0 interface

- which corresponds to the ESXi host vmnic0.
Unfortunately, I don't understand your question and cannot answer it because I don't actually identify which is "the physical switch port" in my architecture.

From the ESXi shell, this command is not available.
Where from should I be running this command instead?
Is there an equivalent command that can be run from the ESXi shell?

I have tried to set "Promiscous mode" to "Accept" in "vSwitch0 Properties" via "vSphere Client".

vSwitch0 Properties, Promiscous mode, AcceptvSwitch0 Properties, Promiscous mode, Accept

But install fails as before.
And it fails at the end, that is after nearly 45 minutes, which makes things hard to test.

I ran the following command but it didn't show me anything interesting:

esxi-host# vim-cmd vmsvc/getallvms
Vmid: 5
Name: cisco_unity_connection
File: [datastore1] cisco_unity_connection/cisco_unity_connection.vmx
Guest OS: rhel6_64Guest
Version: vmx-11
Annotation: This OVA template allows deployment of a virtual machine for use with Cisco Unity Connection. Multiple deployment options are possible. Please visit http://bit.ly/1HbpXBx for additional information on installing Cisco Unity Connection in a virtual machine.

Please help.
Best regards.

Hello.

Here is an update.

I installed a Debian VM on the very same ESXi host.

The newly installed Debian OS has perfect network connectivity.

It even got its IP via DHCP and pings to public IP 8.8.8.8 are successful.

So to me, the problem is related to the Cisco Unity Connection VM rather that the ESXi host vSwitch0.

Thank you for helping me.

Hello.

Cisco Unity Connection (CUC) is still not capable of installing itself.

The "Network Connectivity Check" still fails (see my first post in this thread) and the CUC install never completes.

At the end, a message tells me to do a reinstall and I can never log into the new OS.

On the DHCP server which is also the Cisco ISR4331, I've noticed something:

isr4331# show ip dhcp binding
Bindings from all pools not associated with VRF:
IP address Client-ID/ Lease expiration Type State Interface
                Hardware address/
                User name
[...]
192.168.3.252 000c.290d.d7a7 Jun 20 2018 11:23 AM Automatic Selecting ucse0/1/0
[...]

The "State" is "Selecting".

And after 5 minutes, the binding disappears altogether.

What does it mean?

Thank you.

I have the same problem. The IP of the machine is reachable from all other hosts. It's a valid IP. I can start a brand new NON-CISCO VM and assign that IP to it and it runs just fine with no issues...but the cisco installer keeps crapping out on "checking network connectivity..." I hit IGNORE and it goes back to the same 'checking network connectivity' screen
