UCS Blade has a different SMBIOSGUID on the BMC Board than the Management GUI

Hello everbody,

we have the following behavior,

The UCS Blade has a different SMBIOSGUID on the BMC Board than the Management vNIC. This prevents us to perform an bare-metal deployment within SCVMM.

(for detail info see in pdf please)

Is it a bug or normal behavior, or we have a wrong configuration on Cisco UCS.

We use 2.2.5a as UCS OS.

Thank you

Best regards

Georg

Hi Georg

You cannot change the serial number; but configure the UUID pool, which applies for the whole blade, not a particular vnic.

For bare metal deployment, you need a service profile, and this SP refers to a UUID pool, from which a UUID value is extracted.

Can you please post the error message ?

Walter

Hi,

yes i have an service-profile and uuid pool.

the error is that uuid in the ucs gui ist different to the uuid in VMM which is discovered with ipmi.

ucs uuid gui cf7161c4-42a1-11e5-0005-000000000001

vmm            c46171cf-a142-e511-0005-000000000001

for the same blade, i think it must be same uuid value.

I have done a SW Update 2.2.6(c), i have the same behavior.

Thank you

Best regards

Georg

Hi Georg

You used the hardware derived UUID, which is not recommended; it will change if the SP is moved.

Be aware, that there are many UUID's; Not only OS and filesystems have them. There just are UUIDs for different things: raid array, device, partition, LUKS containers, LVM PV's... and finally filesystems.

Therefore I could imagine that VMM derives just another UUID from hardware. But again, if you move to another blade, it would be changed as well.

see eg.

Walter.

Hi Walter,

we want do baremetal deployment with VMM, so the Problem is VMM discovery Uiid with ipmi and the blade use the "GUI UUID" for pxe boot. The "UUID IMPI" and the "UUID GUI" is simalar the same but not identical.

Hi,

it is possible to get alle uuid information of one blade is using with powershell?

Best regards

Georg

Hi George

The UUID consists of a Prefix and Suffix

In your case:

Prefix: cf7161c4-42a1-11e5 is identical for all Servers, and specific to this UCS domain (don't change it)

Suffix: 0005-000000000001: what you defined in the UUID Pool definition

Therefore you see, that VMM is using a different prefix, but the same suffix.

Is it not possible to just use the suffix for blade discovery ?

Walter.

Hi Walter,

VMM discover the UUID with IMPI from the Server-Blade, i only give vmm the IP Adresse (CIMC from Blade) and login information.

VMM learn the UUID from the blade. Why is the information ober IMPI discovery different, my understanding is the prefix shut be identical for all uuids from the ucs domain.

Best regards

Georg

Hi Georg

There is a prefix for the whole UCS !

On the other hand, I believe that each blade has a BIOS UUID and therefore prefix, which is of course different.

Please check 2 blades, and they will return a different BIOS UUID prefix.

In principle, one could modify the BIOS UUID; UCS manager doesn't however do it.

On my windows 7 pc, I can retrieve a UUID as well

C:\Users\wdey>wmic csproduct get name,uuid
Name     UUID
23561D9  4B54D001-524D-11CB-816F-FDE1B910AE8E

Walter

Hi,

i have found this bug

https://tools.cisco.com/quickview/bug/CSCtk09043

I think that´s the problem.

Georg

Good news !

Bad news: No release planned to fix this bug
