I am trying to get a handle on Best practices around the networking part of the ESX-i deployment. I am using 5.1 I am not using a V1000 so is it better to add another Vswitch to esx or is it good enough just to create another port group.. As well as should the managment on esxi be in same vlan or does it matter.

There seems to be many ways to do this but I have not seen a best practice

Based on trafffic type, you can follow best practices suggested by VMware.
