The UCS Platform Emulator (PE) is a version of the UCS Manager that runs in a hypervisor (VMWare, Hyper-V). No UCS hardware is required to run UCS PE. And the UCS Platform Emulator is completely free (Cisco.com login required).
UCS PE is designed for:
Running the UCS Manager GUI --- for training on UCS, as well as providing "live" demos
Learning/developing UCS PowerTool, Python or XML scripts and commands. The UCS PE exposes the same XML API as a physical UCS domain.
Staging and Modeling configuration changes. With the UCS PE, you can import production hardware configuration, import production UCS configurations (pools, policies, templates, service-profiles), and then dry-run proposed configuration changes in a risk-free simulated environment that reflects your production environments.
