EMC Smarts v9 and UCS Manager

Hi All,

We have recently setup a Cisco UCS platform, with 4 chassis, and using the fabric interconnect/UCS Manager to manage the racks.

Our monitoring team uses EMC Smarts (v9) for monitoring the whole environment. We have been having trouble getting the UCS platform setup into EMC Smarts, so just wondering if anyone out there uses a similar configuration and how they do it.

One of the issues we have found was that, the UCS Manager wasn't discoverable by SMARTS and only the interconnects were.

Also we have been told that UCSM Mibs contain SNMP traps for a few specific events, and the rest of the MIBs are for polling, however SMARTS doesn't provide custom polling by default for UCS. Has anyone come across this? I am quite interested i finding out how everyone monitors their platforms especially if they using EMC Smarts.

I am no monitoring expert, but can find out specific details if need be from our monitoring team.

Cheers

Rav

We have managed to get out SMARTS expert to get the mibs loaded and understand UCS. He used a test lab and quoted about 40hrs worth of effort to do it though.

The problems are similar to yours:

  • Cluster IP not responding to SNMP but the individual FI address all OK
  • SMARTS refers to the Cluster IP for monitoring and shows everything as Down/Unresponsive

We see inbound snmp but no response for the cluster IP.

Any UCS experts know why this is so? and what the fix is?

Cheers

Mike
