We moved off of UNIX platform for LMS 4.0.1 - but this is a matter of taste (in my opinion - I am not aware of any specific feature set only working on UNIX or Windows) and what best fits your environment.
We are using 2008 R2 for LMS 4.0.1 - runs great - need loads of RAM and page file but we have not had many challenges. Java seems to run away with memory at times and we cycle out the services but it runs great.
Just another tip that might help - in the top right corner between the "star" (favourites) and the "film strip" (videos) there is a LEGACY pull down with all the classic tools and menus if you are having trouble with the new UI
