Any Global RAS VPN RAS solutions?

With the understanding that other countries are underdevloped in at the Internet and the dialup modems ports are hard to manage and have greater cost. Has anyone put in place a VPN network in Eroupe, Asia and Latin America? What are your challanges and successes? Is anyone out there doing this well and mind sharing some ideas?

Our company has established a VPN between our offices in the UK with offices in Manila (Philippines) and Mumbai (India). We also have remote mobile VPN users. The main challange was dealing with IS companies and telecom providers who do not have much of an idea about VPN technology. We have also found that because of the proliferation of telecom companies in Philippines and India it is difficult to get a satisfactory connection speed or one that is stable. This is mainly due to the lack of knowledge and underdeveloped state of the telecom systems within the countries. We are also in discussion with local telecoms to provide us with SLAs. We are currently looking at providing our clients with access to our centralised systems through our VPN as they have offices in Australia, North America, it is also being investigated to provide connection to vessels so that they can also access various systems centrally.

We at Lufthansa Systems are using a VPN solution to connect more than 3500 users over the globe with our central office in Germany. Our Users are pilots, crews etc. In the last years it was mostly the mobile user, but during the last year we also connected networks in different international locations to our datacenter in germany. The main challenge was to build a method to use several providers of internet access in one solution for the mobile users. Also you have to update the telephone entry often.

In the VPN LAN to LAN solution the main problem is the organisational matter with a lot of different local providers around the globe. And in afrika we really have problems to get even lines under 64K for these connections.

We are now trying to get SLA for VPN connections, but there is still a lot to do.

Thanks a lot for you comments. Not sure if you have used it or not. We produce a great product called connection manager. It helps you to manage your phone books. So we expect our carriers to manage the phone books the the CM clinet downloads the updates. This is not a sale but an perfessional exchange. Thanks and good luck.

In my earlier company, I had implemented the services from IPASS (www.ipass.com). They cover almost all major cities in the world. We found the service very useful & their support was excellent.

uses IPass Global Roaming Partners or another one ?

Hello Patrice,

the solution is PC-based, currently we have no requests for PDA.

We can use every reachable internet provider (There exists no provider who has accesspoints in every country of a LH service - currently more then 160 countries), but we like to use solutions were the User authentication can be done by us via radius. So one userid can be used with different providers. Currently AT&T and UUNET are offering such a service, we haven´t tested ipass yet.

I understand about (Radius), IPASS offer global roaming VPN services around the world with many service providers it provide (IPSec or SSL) encryption)compliant with Cisco and Nortel VPN Equipments.
