Desktop Client to Firewall vs Router to Firewall VPN

The users in the remote offices have demonstrated that the Desktop Client to Firewall VPN tunnel shows a better performance than the router to firewall VPN tunnel while using a client/server application, where as ping tests utlizing large packets sizes have shown only marginal differences of 5 to 10 Ms. Can anyone explain why this is?

The ping tests are real numbers and reliable. User reports can be very subjective. I guess I would go with real numbers myself.
