DSL -- MAC Encapsulated Routing (MER/ETHoA)

Hi experts,

I had a DSL modem with MER protocol and encapsulation LLC/SNAP assigned by the provider. Evertyhing went well..

Topology: Internet==Modem==Switch==Client

We want to change the modem into a Cisco 1760 so that we can route the DSL line along with other wan connection.

Topology: Internet==Router==Switch==Client

After I plug the RJ-11 into the WIC-1ADSL on the router, interface ATM1/0 is up and up. But how come I cannot reach the internet from client and even can't ping the ATM interface?

Does Cisco only work with PPP? And cannot use MER? And where did I get the concept wrong?

Please please do help.

Thanks in advance,

Makka

Makka,

As far as I read it MER is the same as RFC1483 Bridging.

RFC1483 Bridging Baseline Architecture

http://cisco.com/en/US/partner/tech/tk175/tk15/technologies_white_paper09186a0080093bd0.shtml

Depending on the ADSL service you get from your provider:

RFC1483 Bridging

PPPoA

PPPoE

The provider can use a different VC.

For several reason PPPoA/PPPoE is prefered over

RFC1483 Bridging.

Check with your provider if you can use PPPoA/PPPoE.

If not then stick with RFC1483.

From this URL you can find several examples for RFC1483, PPPoA, PPPoE with NAT etc.

http://cisco.com/en/US/tech/tk175/tk15/tech_configuration_examples_list.html

I hope this helps,

Bas.
