Today I have done test upgrade to IOS 12.4(6)T on one of our Cisco 871 routers. I have loaded new IOS c870-advipservicesk9-mz.124-6.T.bin and restarted router. When router rebooted I received following error:

Booting flash:/c870-advipservicesk9-mz.124-6.T.bin

ELF Loader: read error

Elf loader error

and got stuck in rommon. Does anybody know what could be the problem?

Briefly checked the system requirements for 12.4-6.T.

According to the datasheet adv ip services requires 28Mb flash but a standard router only holds 24Mb:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/routers/ps380/products_data_sheet0900aecd8028a976.html

Did you check this requirement and is the existing router licensed for adv ip? My guess is that the image does not fit in your flash. You must have observed some errors while performing the upgrade?

Regards,

Leo

I have purchased additional 16Mb of flash when I got router. Something else must be wrong.

Cheers

That is typically the sign of one of the following items:

1) corrupt IOS image - re-download the image from Cisco

2) bad DRAM - replace or try different DRAM

3) bad flash - replace or try different flash

4) bad mainboard DRAM - in this case you are SOL

5) wrong IOS version for the device

pick your poison, but it's one of the above.

Yes i have fix it. Unfortunately I don't remember how. I think that I have completely erased flash memory and than upload IOS image again. Which router do you have? Also download IOS again from Cisco web site.

My router is cisco 857 W. Did you format your flash? Is FORMAT dangerous for router's flash? I am afraid I may destory flash memory.

I have downloaded the c850-advsecurityk9-mz.124-15.T1.bin.
