Problem with Virtual Adapter (VPN client)

I have been running version 4.0.3C which has been working fine for some time. I upgraded to version 4.0.4 but none of my connections would work. I have tried reinstalling various versions including the original 4.0.3C but there is still a problem with the Virtual Adapter. I am now on 4.0.3F and the log is as follows:

Cisco Systems VPN Client Version 4.0.3 (F)

Copyright (C) 1998-2003 Cisco Systems, Inc. All Rights Reserved.

Client Type(s): Windows, WinNT

Running on: 5.1.2600

1 09:26:43.621 05/18/04 Sev=Warning/3 IKE/0xA3000064

Disabling Split-DNS, VPN 3000 Concentrator Version 3.5 is not supported

2 09:26:43.841 05/18/04 Sev=Warning/2 CVPND/0xE3400014

The VPN Client could not find the adapters GUID.

3 09:26:43.841 05/18/04 Sev=Warning/3 CVPND/0xE340000D

The Client was unable to enable the Virtual Adapter because it could not set the IP configuration into the registry.

4 09:26:43.841 05/18/04 Sev=Warning/2 CM/0xE310000A

The virtual adapter failed to enable

5 09:26:43.841 05/18/04 Sev=Warning/2 IKE/0xE3000099

Failed to active IPSec SA: Unable to enable Virtual Adapter (NavigatorQM:938)

6 09:26:43.841 05/18/04 Sev=Warning/2 IKE/0xE30000A5

Unexpected SW error occurred while processing Quick Mode negotiator:(Navigator:2201)

Whne I type the "ipconfig" command I no longer see the Virtual adapter listed and If I try to repair the connection it says the TCP/IP is not running on the adapter. When I look at the adapter TCP/IP is bound. I am unable to use system restore as I have no restores from before the first upgrade. I am running Windows XP with SP 1 and all the hotfixes.

The device seems to be locked and I can't remove it from the registry.

Any help much appreciated.

You may have an issue with the DNE device. See if DNE is still bound the to adapter.

Here is some doc from the cisco vpn client faq:

A. Check the networking Control Panel to ensure that the Deterministic NDIS Extender (DNE) was not installed. Also check for the uninstall file by going to Microsoft > Current Version > Uninstall. Then remove the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\{5624C000-B109-11D4-9DB4-00E0290FCAC5} file and retry the uninstallation.

Even better this link describes how to uninstall the vpn client v3.5 and higer under windows 2000. For XP it may be similar.

Let me know if one of these took care of your issue.

Thanks very much for the helpful response.

I found the article on manually uninstalling the VPN client before your post which I did to no avail.

I then used the "netsh" command to reset the IP config in XP and resinatlled the client. (You cant remove IP from XP)

The client now works, however, I do not see the Virtual adapter listed in the Network Connections or if I do an ipconfig. Even more bizarre is the fact that no routing entries exist either but the VPN works ok so I will put up with it for now!

Thanks again and yes it's definitly the DNE which is the problem!
