"The AnyConnect Downloader is performing update checks..." message hangs

I'm using AnyConnect 4.1.08005 on my Windows 7 Enterprise x64 work laptop. Each time I connect to the VPN, after entering the password and clicking "Accept" on the AUP dialog, the AnyConnect window shows "The AnyConnect Downloader is performing update checks..." for several minutes. This message hangs and prevents the VPN session from being established for 3 - 7 minutes each and every time, which is problematic.
I requested support within my company, and had them update my version of AnyConnect. The problem only got worse. My company's desktop support said my router was at fault, which does not make sense to me.
Can someone please advise how I can eliminate or mitigate this problem?

What version is on the ASA?

Can anyone tell me what the client is DOING when this message hangs? Is it trying to contact a certain host? Is there some way I can determine what host that is?
What is strange is that sometimes the delay is only a couple minutes. One time (literally only just once over the past several months), there was no delay at all. Other times, as I mentioned, the message hangs for upwards of 7 minutes.
If it were a simple matter of something timing out, I would expect the delay to be more or less the same each time.
It is very frustrating to have to wait several minutes each time I connect to the VPN. It's particularly bad when I've been paged and have only a few minutes to acknowledge the page and prevent others in my group from being paged, but have to wait and wait for this thing to allow me onto the network.
