How do I set up Telnet on a switch? I thought that I had set it up but for some reason it is not working. Can you give me step by step instructions to set remote access to the switch?

Ok, so apparently I have set this up wrong from the beginning.
My findings
1) I have VLAN1 set to the ip address not the correct interface0
A) i have followed the directions form the link you sent me and set up interface0 but still have problems.
2) when setting the ip address on interface0 it shows as down and I cannot bring it up for some reason.
3) still cannot ping the switch.
but the weird thing is all the devices attached to this switch still work including wireless AP's and desktops.

We do not have much information to work with other than the fact that you thought that you had set up the switch for telnet but it does not work. Can you post the config? That might help us to identify the issue.

Hello,
I assume your are using 10.11.0.200 for Telnet access ? The config looks good, try to remove the IP address from the Vlan 1 interface:

Yes I am using the 200 as the telnet address.
I'm a bit of a noob for Cisco but when i was setting the switch up i read that to set up the address of the switch you have to do that on VLAN1 so what is the difference between the interface0 and VLAN1?
I will remove VLAN1 and see if that works.

Hello,
the Vlan 1 interface is generally used for management. All switches in your network should have an IP address on Vlan 1 from the same address space.
That said, you can also try and shut the FastEthernet0 interface and use the Vlan 1 interface. Can you actually ping 10.11.0.200 ?

No, can't ping it either. just comes back unreachable. Interface0 was not set up until i read through the link you sent me. I set it up off of the instructions on the page. And reading through it, it actually made sense. So VLAN1 should be set up if i am going to mange the switch through telnet and interface0 is how the switch sends traffic to the rest of the network?

Hello,
typically you only need interface Vlan 1 up, with a reachable IP address. The reason you cannot telnet is that you have no IP reachability. I am not sure if you have already mentioned this somewhere in the thread, but what IP address are you trying to telnet from, that is, from which device are you trying to reach the switch ?

The original post asked the question of how to set up telnet on a switch. And we have been trying to make suggestions about that. But I believe that the real issue in this discussion is how to establish IP connectivity for the switch. Once that is accomplished then dealing with telnet will be easier.
So perhaps the original poster can tell us about this switch. What does it connect to? What devices are connected to its switch ports? Is the device he is using to originate the telnet connect to this switch or is it connected to something else?

So the switch is in an IDF off of one of the wings of the building. the swtich supports wireless AP's and desktops. It is connected back to our core blade switch via fiber. The AP's and desktops work just fine and have no problems connecting. I have multiple VLAN's here. the switch ip is on the native VLAN. I am trying to ping and connect via my desktop which is in a different part of the building but same VLAN. I attempted to ping from another cisco switch on the same VLAN and still nothing.
the ip of my workstation is 10.11.23.121. the ip of the switch i tried to ping from was 10.11.0.188.

Thanks for the additional information about the switch. Based on what you have told us I am guessing that there is not anything connected to interface Ethernet 0. I suggest that you remove the IP address from that interface and make sure that the IP address is configured on interface vlan 1 (perhaps best would be in config mode to use the command
default interface ethernet0
Then you should do this in config mode
interface vlan 1
no shut
end
That will get you out of config mode and hopefully will establish IP connectivity. If it does not establish IP connectivity then we have some more investigation to do.
