VPN's for Dummies

I'm doing research for a project in my tech writing class and have chosen the rather broad topic of VPN's. The problem I am encountering is that I don't have enough general knowledge to understand what everyone is talking about. Is there a site which might give me a "VPN for Dummies" type of crash course so that I can figure out where exactly I want to go with my definition and description. Like most English majors, I have a working knowledge of Word, Excel, etc., but not much more beyond that!
