I know how to setup PUTTY when using DB9 or DB25 rollover cables with COM port but what are the steps when you use a console cable that has rj45 connectors on both ends?

Hi Anthony,

could you be more specific on what type of cable you're using.

Normally if you use the console port it doesn't matter whether you're using the blue cable (RJ45 to RS232) or a standard ethernet cable with the cisco provided RJ45 to RS232 adapter. The settings in Putty should be the same. Normally it works with default settings an 9600bps.

If you're using the management port (RJ45 as well) you need to set an IP address first and then telnet into your router. Set the IP address via console or express setup.

I read the Cisco console kit comes with a rollover cable with rj45 connectors on both ends. Can that be used to console into the router and if so what setting do u input in PUTTY?

good idea as most laptops do not have serial connectors and many people don't want to have to buy a serial to USB adapter.

There is no way you can connect the console to the ethernet port. It is not the same type of signal. The console port is always a serial connection.

The rollover cable (blue) can be used with an adapter RJ45 to Serial. This is normally shipped with the console kit.

So from my point of view you have following options to connect to the device:

• Use a console cable (blue) with either RJ45 / Serial connectors or a RJ45 / RJ45 rollover with Adapter. Both require a serial port on the notebook or a USB to serial Adapter.
   
• Some devices allow you to connect to a USB console. So you just require a USB / USB cable
   
• Use the Mgmt. Port (not Console). This requires an IP address to be configured on that interface first. You do that bei either doing trough console or use Cisco Express Setup.

Oh ok, I was under the impression that console (rollover cables) now came with an option of rj45 connectors on both ends and the pin layouts were set in a way to be able to console into router without serial connector or USB adapters.

yes, they are shipped with RJ45/RJ45 but you need an adapter.

If we make Rollover cable for console connectivity for our cisco product, as its easy to make like one end would be opposite to other end; will it work properly?

I'm having a similar problem. I cannot connect to my 800 Series Cisco router's console port using a USB/RJ45 connector with a Cisco rollover cable. When I open my device Manager on my PC, I can't even see the com port which the Cisco router is using or trying to use. Any suggestions?

First Download and install PuTTY (emulator terminal software) from https://www.putty.org/

Step 1: Attach the DV9 Female end of Console cable with the DV9 Male end of the USB to DV9 Serial Converter and then connect the RJ54 connector end of the Console cable to the Cisco router or Switch.
First check the COM port number

Step 2: Check the COM Port number:
=> Go Device Manager->Port (COM & LPT)-> check USB Serial Port (COM port)

Step 3: Open Putty
-> Select Connection Type to "Serial"
-> in Serial Line change the COM port number exactly which we checked in step 2.
-> click open and a black window will appear and press Enter finally it will access the Cisco Device.
-> Type "enable" to go to privilege mode.
