Can I have a 10G SFP in port 1 and a 1G SFP port 2 on a 5520?

Would that work or if I had a 1g SFP in port 1 and a 10G SFP in port 2 would the speed throttle down to 1g on port 2?

Won't work because you cannot etherchannel two different speeds.

I don't want to use an etherchannel. My existing 10g is a trunk and I want to add the 1g going to a different switch.

The answer is no.

It is recommended to have all ports as either 10 G or 1 G. In case they are different, port 1 SFP determines the mode of operation and functionality on the other SFPs may not work.
