Dear community,
Several days ago, I have obtained a CISCO Aironet 1042 (AIR-LAP1042N-E-K9) access point from eBay. The seller has a 100% rating and the other customers stated the devices were working.
I have now tried my hardest to get this thing running as a standalone AP, but it just won't succeed. I have seen the IP of the AP in my DCHP list, but as soon as I try to enter it in either PuTTY or Microsoft Telnet or my web browser, to open the config menu, but the connection always ends in a nothing. I have encountered that the LED of the AP keeps cycling between Red, Amber and green. I tried downloading the IOS software, but I can't, because I don't own a Cisco Customer ID. Do I need a WLC for an autonomous AP?
What can I do to get this AP running?
Thanks so far

Hi there,
You have purchased a lightweight AP, so a WLC is required to make it operate. thankfully there is an autonomous image you can download:
...but like you say, if you don't have a contract for it you can't download it. However....if your search the Cisco Advisories page for '1040':
...it will list vulnerabilities which effect your AP. Cisco offers upgrades to users who do not have service contracts in these cases
Customers who purchase directly from Cisco but do not hold a Cisco service contract and
customers who make purchases through third-party vendors but are unsuccessful in obtaining
fixed software through their point of sale should obtain upgrades by contacting the
Cisco Technical Assistance Center (TAC): http://www.cisco.com/en/US/support/tsd_cisco_worldwide_contacts.html Customers should have the product serial number available and be prepared to provide the
URL of this advisory as evidence of entitlement to a free upgrade.
Just make sure you tell them you want the latest autonomous image :)
cheers,
Seb.
