Which combination (802.11n with 802.11a or 802.11n with 802.11g) has the best performance for the clients.

I read some place that in a mixed environment the 802.11n performance is lower than a pure 802.11n.

It sounds to me like you might want to read the following link..... Please note the data from the tests they perform. It should give you at least some idea of what to expect in a mixed mode environment...
