Hi,

when setting up two AIR-CT5520-50-K9 controllers in a HA setup, is it possible to transfer the 50 embedded licenses of the Standby controller into to Primary active controller?

King regards,

Geert

I had seen that as well - documentation for HA setup imply you have to have the minimum license count on the secondary, and that the license count will be added to the primary.  After doing the HA setup, I noticed the license count on primary wasn't adjusted to reflect the license count from secondary.

Now, Cisco may have changed their licensing mode, for some SKU's of 5520 anyway...  It looks like you can specify the number of licences you want - so could add them, providing you have purchased or intend to purchase licenses ?

When it comes to licensing, you always want to make sure that you keep track of what license is on what device in case of support or RMA.  5520 uses RTU license so you can add license count as its a trust between you and Cisco.  If you purchased 50 for one controller and want to transfer them, you can open a tac licensing case to have the 50 transferred to a different controller so its tied to a SN.

Hi Geert,

With traditional licensing on 5508 controllers the secondary unit should have at least 50 licenses or be the specific HA SKU. This requirement is not applicable if you use 5508 controllers together with "Cisco ONE" licensing (C1-AIR-CT5508-K9 SKU). With "Cisco ONE" the secondary unit does not need to have any license at all, the primary should have at least one AP license.

However, with 5520 controllers the requirement of having 50 licenses on the secondary unit does not apply. With older controller types you could not move 'build-in" AP licenses, only the "added licenses". My advice is that you contact the Cisco licensing desk (licensing@cisco.com) and explain your situation. Provide your CCO, current license count and the serial numbers of both controllers. Let us know about the outcome.

Ah, that explains it.  My units were C1-AIR-CT5508-K9 .
