air-lap1142n-a-k9 autonomous or controller?

This item was purchased by my company online, and I have spent hours trying to get it to work. I can not telnet in to it from the network: "Password required, but none set..." comes up. Through the searches I've done on this model it seems this model may require a controller. Is there any way to find out whether or not this is a standalone unit?

you could console into the AP, and do a show version.  If you see k9w7 it is autonomous if it is k9w8 it needs a controller.

Is there any way to console in without DB9? I don't have any serial ports. Also, if it does need a controller is there any way to make it autonomous? I read on another post that it works vice versa.
